Chandigarh: Air pollution on Diwali was worse than last two years in the city as the safe level was breached at different sites, according to data released by the UT administration.

Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee (CPCC) monitored the air quality and collected the data from three locations — sectors 17, 22 and 29. In all the three places, the respirable suspended particulate matter (RSPM) was found to be higher that the safe level of 100 microgram per cubic metre. In Sector 22, it was 316 mcg/cu m and 330 mcg/cu m in Sector 29. In 2015, the levels were 124 mcg/cu m and 189 mcg/cu m in sectors 22 and 29, respectively. In Sector 17, the RSPM level was the lowest with 225 mcg/cu m.

Chandigarh Pollution Control Committee officials said higher levels of RSPM were also due to dry weather persisting in the region. Santosh Kumar, director, environment, said, "Besides crackers, dry weather also played a role behind the high RSPM levels. Last year, rain took place during this period and pollution was less. In 2013, the rise was more as compared to this time."

On the other hand, maximum noise pollution was found in Sector 22 between 9pm to 10pm with a decibel level of 86.3 against the standard value of 55 DB (A). In Sector 17, the decibel level was 67.6 DB between 8pm to 9pm.
