Bikers carry wildlife conservation message

Dimapur, October 6 : To spread the message of importance and significance of conservation of wildlife, Kohima and Dimapur Forest Divisions, Department of Environment, Forests and Climate Change and Nagaland Motorcycle Club jointly organised a “Wildlife Conservation Awareness Rally” from Dimapur to Kohima today. The rally was organised in commemoration of observation of Wildlife Week from October 2 to 8.

Principal Chief Conservator of Forests & Head of Forest Force I Panger Jamir flagged off the rally of 23 bikers at Forest Office Complex, Dimapur.

On the way, the bikers halted at Pherima village and interacted with the village authorities and school children to sensitise them about the significance of wildlife conservation. The rally concluded at War Cemetery, Kohima where a short programme was held.

Congratulating the bikers for success of the rally, PCCF Jamir said climate change has become a reality, affecting our environment in some way or the other. He said observation of Wildlife Week is related to bio-diversity and climate while emphasising on protection and conservation of migratory Amur Falcons in Nagaland. He stated that migration of Amur Falcons interlink s crops production in South Africa that has been authenticated.

Calling the media the ambassador for disseminating the awareness on conservation and protection of wildlife and bio-diversity, Jamir said it is through media that the villagers and the society can be sensitised on the issue.

Conservator of Forest Santhil Kumar hoped the bike riders would act ambassadors to spread the message to protect and conserve the wildlife among the villages and also wherever they go.

A representative from the Nagaland Motorcycle Club said, “Many a time, we abuse and misused our discretionary power of being the land owner. However, such occasion opens our mind to take care of our nature, animal, weather and our environment.” He thanked the Forest department for inviting them to take part in the rally and added that the Club was proud to be a part of the occasion.

Talking about the Club, he informed that it has around 80 bikers as members from Kohima, Dimapur, Wokha, Mokokchung and Mon. He also shared some activities taken up by the Club such as a ride for disabled people and orphanage homes on August 15, 2016 and other such initiatives in recent years.

He said that the Club looks forward to associate with any other department in future. He also informed that the Club will be celebrating its 7th anniversary at Midway Resort, on October 7 and North East Riders’ Meet in Shillong from October 9 to 10 where more than thousand bikers from all over the world are expected.

District Forest Officer Sidramappa MC, who chaired the programme, said the bike ride targeted the highway in order to sensitise the people on the protection of wildlife. DCF Velatso Demo pronounced the vote of thanks.
