The population of tigers at the Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve in the district has risen to 60, according to provisional figures of a recent census.

“According to a census conducted recently in seven forest ranges in the STR, the tiger population has increased to 60, as against 50 during the previous census,” Director of the reserve, Rajkumar told reporters in Erode.

He said only one tiger on an average died every year — due to illness, while crossing the water courses with its cubs, or during a fight with other tigers. He said no poaching of tigers has taken place in the reserve and no feline has attacked a human so far inside the forest area.

He cautioned the public crossing the forest area and requested them to avoid travelling alone between 6 pm and 7 amdue to movement of animals.

The National Tiger Conservation Authority had in January signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Wildlife Institute of India to start monitoring by drones in five tiger reserves of Panna, Jim Corbett National Park, Kaziranga, Sundarbans and the Sathyamangalam forest of Tamil Nadu.

In an official statement, Union Environment Minister Anil Madhav Dave on July 29 expressed hope that India, home to 70 per cent of world’s tiger population, would be able to double the number of wild cats by 2022 through “conservation and care”.

Although India has the maximum number of tigers amongst the 13 Tiger Range Countries (TRC) in the world, the status of the wild cats across the TRCs continues to remain endangered.
