NAINITAL: A male tiger was found dead on the Kosi river bed in Ramnagar forest division of Kumaon on Wednesday morning. According to officials, it had been injured in a territorial fight with another tiger and succumbed to its injuries before it could be rescued and treated by forest staff.

The tiger was a 10-year-old adult male who sustained serious injuries in a fight with another tiger. The forest department was planning to tranquilise and take it to Nainital Zoo. "The animal was spotted over the last two days on the Kosi river bed, after which we came to know about its injuries. We planned to rescue and get it treated but died before we could take it to Nainital," said divisional forest officer of Ramnagar division, Parag MadhukarDhakate, talking to TOI.

"The tiger's post-mortem has been conducted as per the guidelines of National Tiger Conservation Authority and tissue and other samples have been sent to Wildlife Institute of India, Dehradun and Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Bareilly for further requisite tests."

Forest officials also said that the average life span of a tiger in the wild is 10-12 years but they live longer in captivity because of many factors such as absence of territorial fighting, availability of easy food during old age and proper medical care. According to data compiled by the Wildlife Protection Society of India, as many as nine tigers have either been killed or found dead in Uttarakhand till now this year. On May 8, a five-year-old male was found dead on the Haridwar-Najibabad highway near Rajaji Tiger Reserve and was suspected to have been hit by a truck. On March 6, a five to six months old male cub was found near a railway track between Lalkuan and Kashipur railway stations in Nainital and was suspected to have been hit by a train.

At least 74 tigers died between January 1 and June 26 this year in India. Worryingly, there has also been a spike in poaching-related fatalities during this period, statistics collated from different parts of India by wildlife activists shows.

Poaching worries
