Campaign to promote adoption of wild animals

Correspondent :
A poster to popularise the concept of ‘Wildlife Adoption’, brought out jointly by Bapuji Rural Enlightenment and Development Society (BREDS), Visakha Zoo Lovers and Indira Gandhi Zoological Park (IGZP), was released by Zoo Curator B. Vijaya Kumar at the Visakhapatnam Public Library here on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Vijay Kumar said the objective of the adoption of wild animals in Vizag Zoo was to increase awareness on local biodiversity and conservation of wildlife among all sections of the people. Many animal species were becoming extinct due to habitat destruction and adoption of wild animals would generate interest among the donors to know more about the species, which they adopt.

He said a programme would be conducted at the zoo on July 8 and all interested persons could come and donate. NGOs have approached us to raise funds in cash and kind. The names of those donating over Rs.10,000 would be displayed at the zoo and they would also be eligible for IT exemption besides receiving a certificate and free entry to the zoo five times a year.

Donors were, however, free to donate whatever they want either in cash or kind. Those donating smaller amounts would also be invited to participate in all the events at the zoo.

Professor of Zoology in Andhra University Ch. Manjulatha said donors would develop an attachment towards their adopted animals in course of time.

Project Director of BREDS Pragya Pathak said her organisation was working with the communities at risk and to create awareness on climate change and the need to drastically reduce the use of plastics and encourage people to carry their own bags.

Mr. Vijay Kumar announced a contest to develop the content and photographs required for the proposed Zoo App of Vizag Zoo. The contest is open to all, and entries will be accepted till July-end. The winner, to be declared on August 5, will get a cash prize of Rs.5,000. Details can be had from the Curator on the mobile no. 94408 10160.
