Jamshedpur, July 3: The recent survey undertaken by the Jharkhand State Pollution Control Board (JSPCB) revealed that the air quality in the city is deteriorating.

The survey conducted last month by the Adityapur-based regional office of JSPCB indicated a fall in the city’s ambient air quality.

According to the survey, the respirable suspended particulate matter (RSPM) has gone way beyond the 100 microgram per cubic metre (µg/m3) mark, prescribed by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), in Bistupur and Golmuri.

It was also found much above the permissible limit at Adityapur, an industry hub in the adjoining Seraikela-Kharsawan district. Respirable dust samplers were used to measure the pollution level in the three places.

The RSPM level near Regal Building in Bistupur was found to be 158 microgram per cubic metre (µg/m3) against the permissible limit of 100µg/m3 as prescribed by CPCB.

Ambient air in Adityapur and Golmuri were found to be more polluted with RSPM level hovering at 175µg/m3 and 160µg/m3 mark, respectively. The RSPM level at Sakchi, a commercial hub was found to be 140µg/m3, much above the prescribed limit.

The ambient air wasn’t contaminated in places like Telco, Sonari and Kadma, where the level of pollutants was found to be at the borderline.

The RSPM levels in Telco, Sonari and Kadma were found to be in the range of 90-110µg/m3.

For, the levels of two other major air pollutants– sulfur and nitrogen dioxides were also found to be higher than their permissible limits.

The nitrogen dioxide (NO2) level in ambient air in Bistupur, Golmuri and Sakchi were found to be 48.25 µg/m3 , 47.45 µg/m3 and 46.21 µg/m3, respectively.

Meanwhile the transport department has plans to check the rising level of pollution in the city in which the major area of focus will be on heavy vehicles like trucks, trailers and buses, which add to the level of air pollution to greater extent.

“The surprise crackdown on violating vehicles will be conducted at regular intervals at important points. In case of other State vehicles, a spot fine of Rs. 1,000 would be collected from the driver of the vehicle.

If the violating vehicle belonged to other districts, the check reports would be sent to the Collectors concerned through the RTOs for fixing the fine,” the officials said.

First time offenders in both pollution certificates and pressure horn will have to pay Rs 1000 as fine which would be doubled in case of second time offenders. In case of violation for third time the fitness permit of the vehicle would be cancelled. The transport department will have a database of the offenders.

Meanwhile, district traffic police continued with drive against two-wheeler riders including pillion riders without helmets at several important junctions in the city today.

Offenders have to pay Rs 200 as fine and in case if the pillion rider and driver both are without helmets they would have pay Rs 400.
