Adulterated fuel polluting city air, says KSPCB chief

The adulterated fuel used in vehicles is one of the prime reasons behind the air pollution in the city.

Karnataka State Pollution Control Board chairman Lakshman told reporters on Monday that the Board and the Transport department carried out a random emission tests of 146 diesel and 522 petrol vehicles at five different locations in the city. Only 512 vehicles passed the test and rest could not meet the standards prescribed by the KSPCB.

Plaints from diesel vehicles

Almost all the drivers of the vehicles that failed the test blamed adulterated fuel for not meeting the KSPCB emission standards. “Most of the complaints are from diesel vehicles. Drivers said kerosene-mixed diesel is sold at the fuel stations,” said Lakshman.

Food and Civil Supplies Department will be asked to look into the complaint of adulterated fuel. Also, the KSPCB will collect fuel samples on its own and come out with a report soon, he added.

Maximum complaints of higher carbon emission comes from Tata Indica taxis. He, however, gave a clean chit to the BMTC vehicles. “Almost 99 per cent of the BMTC vehicles passed the emission test. It is because the BMTC has its own fuel service station where sulfur and lead are nil,” said Lakshman.

Joint Director of Transport Department (Enforcement) Narendra Holkar said that in the coming days a mega drive will be carried out in the city to check vehicles for emission.
