Concern over inaction on jumbo poaching

GUWAHATI, April 6 - Environment activist PranabjyotiSarma of Bongaigaon, who is working for the conservation of elephants, has rued that his repeated pleas before the Union Government for initiating steps against the poaching of elephants have fallen on deaf ears.

Sarma told this newspaper that he has been making his pleas before the Union Government for initiating steps to save the pachyderm from the poachers and the smugglers dealing in wildlife parts, since October 2014. He has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Environment and Forest Minister Prakash Javadekar on the issue making the above plea. His representations also accompanied a DVD on the brutal poaching of wild elephants. But so far there is no step initiated by the Union Government in this regard.

The poachers use to feast on the flesh of their victim pachyderm and smuggle out the tusks of the tuskers falling prey to them to outside the country. Some of the poachers include the members of some rebel groups of the State. These rebels use the money earned from such illegal trade to procure automatic firearms.
