After Gurgaon and Delhi, Gzb to go car-free

After Gurgaon and Delhi, Ghaziabad is all set to go car-free for the first time on February 10.

The Ghaziabad Residents’ Welfare Association Federation (GRWAF) met the district administration on Thursday, seeking its support to conduct the initiative aimed at reducing pollution levels by promoting the use of public and non-motorised transport.

“The concern for rising pollution has to come from the local administration. But, our requests for a city bus service, measuring of PM 2.5 at busy locations and controlling factors contributing to air pollution have not been addressed. Air pollution has been affecting the health of residents, particularly children. We request the local administration to control the use of cars on February 10,” Colonel TP Tyagi (retired), a member of the GRWAF said.

The federation plans to deploy its volunteers at five busy intersections -- Atal Chowk in Vasundhara, Chaudhary Morh, Raj Nagar Extension, Mohan Nagar and CISF Crossing in Indirapuram. Volunteers will also distribute pamphlets and flowers to car drivers, requesting them to switch to public transport for a day.

The federation is likely to present the plan to the district magistrate and superintendent of police (traffic) on Friday, the representatives said.

“This is a good initiative as it will help reduce pollution but, it should be made voluntary for residents. We urge the RWA members to apprise the district officials about their plan so that we can help them implement it on a wide scale,” Vimal Kumar Sharma, district magistrate of Ghaziabad, said.

Over 8.3 lakh vehicles ply on Ghaziabad roads every day, which include more than 1.52 lakh cars, according to data of the transport department.

“Nearly one-third of the air pollution in Ghaziabad is from petrol and diesel vehicles. Even traffic jams, due to excessive vehicles, need to be controlled. The best way is to minimise the use of cars,” Ajay Jain, general secretary of the federation, said.

Gurgaon was the first NCR city to observe car-free day beginning last September. The city goes car-free every Tuesday, with office-goers carpooling or cycling to workplaces.
