Chandrapur: Fears of poaching of spotted deer in Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra (FDCM) Jharan forest range have proved to be true. It has come to fore that a gang of poachers from Devai village have killed three spotted deer, including mother and two calves, in compartment number 103 of the forest. Earlier there were reports of four deer being poached, however investigations have proved that only three were killed by the poachers.

FDCM officers arrested as many as 10 people during raids conducted in Devai on Saturday and Sunday, while one other surrendered before the court. All 11 accused were remanded to forest custody remand for three days by judicial magistrate in Gondpipri on Sunday. TOI had published the news of poaching of spotted deers on Saturdays.

The matter had came to light on Thursday, when intestinal remains of multiple deer were found in the forest adjacent to the agricultural fields. However forest officers initially denied poaching and insisted that remains were of some cattle that were slaughtered for partying by villagers. However, soon foresters got clue through police patil about the poaching and raids were carried out on Saturday and Sunday to nab the poachers.

Investigations have revealed that poachers had laid five wire snares in the Jharan range on Wednesday. A mother deer with its two calves got trapped in the snare sometime during the night. On Thursday, poachers killed all three deer and butchered them on the spot to remove skin and meat, while intestinal remains were thrown at the same place. These were later recovered by FDCM officers which led to the exposure of pooching.

FDCM Chandrapur is already facing severe criticism over the death of four tiger cubs and disappearance of mother tiger in its Pathri range. Poaching of three deer at such time has once again exposed the lapses in protection measures in FDCM territory. NGOs have demanded for the handing over of entire FDCM forests to territorial forest administration to save wildlife here.
