BELAGAVI:The eco-sensitive areas of Khanapur taluk in Belagavi might soon have an anti-poaching camp. An NGO plans to make this camp eco-friendly with renewable energy and sustainable technology. The space will be equipped with solar energy and a water harvesting system too.

The project will be taken up by Wildlife Conservation Trust (WCT), an NGO that has worked in collaboration with the state government on many wildlife conservation projects.

WCT president Anish Andheria told Express that during his two-day visit to the Bhimgad Wildlife Sanctuary in Khanapur, he realised the need to establish an anti-poaching camp to strengthen wildlife conservation activities in the area, especially at Jamboti.

“I discussed the same with the Forest Department authorities during a visit to a few eco-sensitive areas in Khanapur. If required, WCT will extend its support to establish the camps,” he said.

Andheria, who visited the sanctuary on Thursday, said he had been to Talewadi, Gavali and other villages within the sanctuary premises. “Incidents of wildlife-human conflict are bound to happen in those places and the Forest Department should try to help the residents relocate. It should be done by taking the villagers into confidence by providing them proper compensation or land,” he said.

He added that the government is planning to accord wildlife sanctuary status to Tilari and the adjacent jungles in Maharashtra, bordering Karnataka.

“Goa, too, is strengthening its wildlife conservation activities within the state and the Karnataka border. This will help conserve wildlife in those jungles,” he said.

He added that most youngsters in the urban areas are unaware of nature’s beauty. They should visit jungles instead of spending time indoors, he said.

He suggested that NGOs, in association with the government, can start nature camps to create awareness about nature’s importance among the youngsters.
