New Delhi: To implement the odd-even scheme on the first-full fledged working day on Monday, the Delhi government has increased arrangements to ensure smooth implementation of the plan.

The government has increased the number of police and traffic officials deployed across the city. Civil volunteers have also been asked to take photographs of violators.

The odd-even scheme that restricts the use of odd number cars on even dates and vice-versa was implemented from 1 January to tackle the issue of growing air pollution in Delhi. It will continue till 15 January.

On Sunday, the state government held a meeting of the coordination committee, including state police, Delhi metro, civil defence and other officials.

“Civil defence volunteers will be given mobile camera and hidden cameras to be used to track violators. Very strong monitoring would be resorted to and no soft approach would be taken. Additional 100 teams of traffic police will be fielded on roads to monitor,” Delhi transport minister Gopal Rai said on Sunday.

“As we saw that on the first day of this pilot project, people came out with odd-numbered vehicles and on the second day, yesterday (Saturday), even-numbered vehicles plied on the roads. This itself is an indication that the mindset of people for environment is changing and I salute all Delhiites for this two days’ success,” Rai added.

The Delhi Transport Corporation is likely to increase the frequency of buses to help ferry 64 lakh commuters, while the Delhi metro is likely to ferry 32 lakh commuters, an increase from the usual number of commuters.
