Chandrapur: While foresters are on the toes searching for the missing mother tigress in Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra's (FDCM) Pathri and Soli ranges, poachers electrocuted a spotted deer at Kalamgaon village under neighbouringSindewahi forest range. Forest officials, however arrested six poachers within a few hours on the basis of intelligence provided by Wildlife Protection Society of India (WPSI).

A gang of six poachers had laid electrified wire for poaching of herbivores in the farm of one RaojiChauke at Kalamgaon on Thursday night. A full grown spotted deer (Chital) was electrocuted by the live wire early on Friday. The poachers removed the animal and took it to their hideout for skinning and chopping. WPSI got information of the poaching and its members tipped off the forest officers about the incident.

A team for foresters led by RFO VB Kambli raided the hideout and nabbed two accused. Later on the basis of information revealed by the accused duo, four more poachers involved in electrocution were rounded up from the same village. Deer skin, wire used for the electrocution and the equipment used for skinning and chopping have been seized from the poachers, said RFO Kambli.

Arrested accused include Ashok Nanaware, KamaldasKasture, GulabNannaware, PrabhakarMagre, RavindraMagre and Pradeep Saosakade, all residents of Kalamgaon. RFO Kambli maintained that poaching was carried out without the knowledge of Chauke in his farm. Forest officers, however, failed to recover the meat of the poached deer. Offence under relevant sections of Wildlife Protection Act 1972 has been registered against the poachers.
