PWD projects fined for pollution

Polluters big and small, from individuals burning leaves to massive construction sites producing dust, have become the targets of an ongoing crackdown by the Delhi Government and municipal corporations.

Four construction sites of the Public Works Department were fined Rs.50,000 each earlier this week by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation as they were found to be uncovered and causing dust pollution. As per a National Green Tribunal order, the sites in Central Zone were challaned.

On Thursday, the Delhi Government convened a meeting of all agencies and stakeholders to review anti-pollution measures. In the past week, 112 challans of Rs.5,000 each have been issued against people burning waste and 26 people were fined for violating dust control measures. The government also sealed three plywood factories that were operating illegally and producing dust.

Minister in-charge of anti-air pollution measures Satyendar Jain said the PWD will inspect cement batch mixing plants to check whether they were compliant with dust control norms. The Delhi Pollution Control Committee said it had carried out 24 inspections at project sites and imposed fines on eight for violating norms in the past week.
