Monkey case: 10 held may not face legal action

THANE: The 10 accused arrested with a five-inch monkey last week are unlikely to face any legal action for poaching or under the wild life protection laws as the monkey has not been listed as an endangered species.

The monkey was found in an apartment in Kandivli. The police said the tiny creature is found only in South America and is nowhere found in India and hence a criminal case can't be filed against the accused. "We consulted the forest officials who told us that the schedule under the wildlife act has not listed this monkey," said a police officer.

The furry grey-haired monkey has been fit and friendly and doesn't like being left alone. It will be handed over to the forest department next week.
