MUMBAI: Wearing a bloodied "chicken" costume and lying with her throat "slit" on a chopping board next to a giant meat cleaver, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India founder Ingrid Newkirk will remind passersby that 'flesh is flesh.' The demo is scheduled for Thursday at Azad Maidan, in honour of World Vegan Month (November).

The words on PETA's meat cleaver will proclaim, "We're All Animals - Go Vegan".

The demo will begin at 12 noon to highlight the issue of animal cruelty, and the fact that a quarter million caged chickens are killed every hour in India.

"When it comes to joy, love, pain and suffering, chickens feel the same as any cow or human," said Newkirk. "PETA points out that an estimated quarter of a million once living, feeling chickens are killed to be eaten every hour in India. We can stop the immense suffering of these gentle birds simply by choosing vegan meals," she stressed.

According to recent studies, eating vegan meals also reduces a person's risk of suffering from heart disease, strokes, diabetes, obesity and cancer and also helps the environment, as raising animals for food is a leading cause of water pollution, land degradation and the greenhouse-gas emissions that cause climate change.
