THANE: The Maharashtra Pol lution Control Board (MPCB) is planning to make residents aware about the illeffects of no ise pollution during the upco ming Diwali festival. The offici als are planning to record the de cibel levels of every firecracker available in the market.

The MPCB plans to burst crackers in front of people so that they can get the feel of how loud a cracker is. The officials will burst the crackers at Railadevi lake premises in Wagle Estate on Thursday and check the sound levels of the crackers.

"Our plan is to burst all the crackers available in the market and also to check if all the brands are maintaining the prescribed noise levels.

According to the rules, atom bombs and Lakshmi bomb must not exceed more than 125 decibel and string firecracker must be 105 decibel," said an MPCB official.

"We also plan to take the help of the city police," he added.

Noise activist Mahesh Bede kar has lauded the MPCB officials effort and said that citizens must refrain from bursting firecrackers as they not only cause noise, but also air pollution.

"This is a welcome move and authorities must conduct more awareness campaigns about the ill effects of the noise pollution on citizens, especially ailing and seniors. They must not just stop at such awareness campaigns but also submit a report to the government and recommend some stern action," he said.
