On Thursday afternoon, forest officials exhumed the buried carcass of an injured flamingo for post-mortem. The department suspects that the bird that had injured wings may have died when pictures were clicked of it by fire officials, who posed with it. The burial of the flamingo in the fire station after its death without the forest department being informed is against the norms. A formal police complaint is expected to be filed after an adequate enquiry.

The injured flamingo was found by Vasai (West) residents in Umelman. On Thursday, dna had reported the incident in its story "Vasai Fire Officials 'kill', bury injured flamingo." Senior Thane forest officials have instructed Mandvi range forest officers to exhume the body for post-mortem and conduct an enquiry.

"The fire brigade should have informed us before taking custody of the migratory bird for treatment and rehabilitation. Instead, they chose to pose with the bird which already had injured wings," said forest official Anil Patil.

"We have recorded statements of officers involved in the flamingo's burial and have exhumed the body to conduct its post-mortem at the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. Soon, we will submit a detailed report of the incident," said Patil.

Sub-fire officer Umesh Dhodi said: "The rescued flamingo could not have been saved due to the grievous nature of the injury. Firemen, who were unaware of norms, buried the bird in the garden," said Dhodi.

"We are co-operating with the forest department in the probe and will instruct officials to take precautions during the rescue of wild animals and birds,"added Dhodi.

"We have asked the veterinarian to conduct an X Ray and post-mortem of the bird. We will also look into the possibility of poaching. It is evident fire officials were on the other side of the law and we have recorded their statements," said Samir Deshpande, assistant conservator of forests.

"We will go ahead and file a complaint against officials as per the Wild Life Protection Act," added Deshpande.
