TAMIL Nadu Newsprint and Papers Ltd (TNPL) has become eligible to trade carbon credits.

It has got its bio-methanation plant registered with the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) as a clean development mechanism, the company informed the stock exchanges.

The Certified Emission Reduction (CERs) accumulated up to March 2006 is likely to be around 90,000 and the potential annual generation is estimated at 35,680 CERs, according to the company.

TNPL said that it was the first paper mill in the country that has registered a CDM project with the UNFCC and also the first CDM project in the waste management sector to be registered with UNFCC.

According to TNPL, it set up a bio-methanation plant in 2003 to generate methane-rich biogas from the bagasse wash water. The Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources supported it as a demonstration project for high rate bio-methanation using pulp and paper mill waste water.

By this process the company generates about 15,000 cu.m of biogas every day, which is being used in the lime kiln to partly replace the costly furnace oil to the tune of 8-10 kilolitres a day. The project, besides reducing fossil fuel consumption, also helps reduce the methane gas emission to atmosphere, which has high global warming potential.
