Energy-efficient vehicles "will reduce pollution"

Students have to be hard working: Vice-Chancellor

CHENNAI: Pollution does not recognise international boundaries, and the solution to reduce pollution and save the earth is through construction of energy-efficient buildings and vehicles and use of renewable energy sources, Mike Connor, British Deputy High Commissioner in Southern India, said on Friday.

Distributing prizes to winners of various competitions held at the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre as part of the Zero Carbon City programme, Mr. Connor said the British Government gave high priority to addressing issues related to climate change, especially by working with young people.

D. Viswanathan, Vice-Chancellor, Anna University, said 30 lakh scientists from India worked in the United States, while 15 lakh scientists worked for the development of other countries. If the country has to achieve President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam's dream of becoming a developed nation by 2020 A.D., students should work hard and be patriotic. "Can we become a developed nation by 2020?" he asked. The students answered "Yes" in unison. K. Thirumurugan and Devulupalli Keerthi from Vidya Vinaya Vinoda Mat. HSS, Besant Nagar were adjudged an excellent team in Level II of the science exhibition competition and P. Prathiba and S.V. Suriyaa of Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya Mat. HSS from West Mambalam were judged excellent in Level I of the same competition. Around 70 prizes were awarded in six competitions. Shields were given to all winners. P. Iyamperumal, executive director, Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre and Kartar Singh, Deputy Director, South India, British Council, spoke.
