Accused in elephant poaching case held in Thiruvananthapuram

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The forest department officials have arrested a city resident, whom they say is a key accused in the case related to poaching of elephants in Malayatoor forest division. The officials identified the accused as Chackai Ravi.

The officials said that Ravi was taken into custody from his house at Pettah following a raid on Monday evening. He was one of the key dealers of ivory taken from elephants killed by poachers in Malayatoor forest division. It was a team of officials from Kodanadu range that arrested Ravi with the help of the forest flying squad here.

Ravi was arrested in the past too by forest officials in 2009 for possessing two tusks weighing around 16kg each. On Tuesday, he was handed over to the officials of the Kodanadu range after recording his arrest here.

The raids were part of the ongoing combing operations in various forest divisions in the state in the wake of poaching of elephants reported recently in Malayatoor forest division. Several other houses in the city too were raided by the officials.

The officials are on the lookout of a few others identified as Preston, Williams and Aji in connection with the poaching case.
