KOCHI: In a rare honour, Cochin Corporation has been invited to participate in a workshop on climate change in Vatican on July 21.

“The goal of the meeting is to raise awareness around the two global emergencies of our time- modern slavery and climate change. We also aim at achieving consensus on the fact that the values of sustainable development are consistent with the values of the leading religious traditions, with a special focus on the most vulnerable individuals and populations; elevating the debate on the moral aspects of environmental protection, in advance of Pope Francis’ forthcoming Encyclical; and helping build a global movement across all religions to focus on sustainable development and climate change throughout 2015 and beyond,” said the invite by Marcelo Sanchez Sorondo, the Chancellor, Vatican City to Mayor Tony Chammany.

The workshop is titled ‘Modern Slavery and Climate Change: The Commitment of the Cities’. Local governments must play an active role in addressing these two emergencies of modern slavery and climate change.

During the workshop, Mayors and local administrators from all over the world will have the chance to share their commitment to Pope Francis.
