Emissions from power sector highest: Environment minister Prakash Javadekar

NEW DELHI: Environment minister Prakash Javadekar on Thursday said green house gas emissions from residential sector was around 6.3 per cent of total national emissions, while the highest was from electricity production.

Replying to a question on whether homes are responsible for highest greenhouse gas emissions, he told Rajya Sabha, "As per India's second national communication to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (2012), Green House Gas (GHG) emissions from residential sector was 95,896 giga grams CO2 equivalent which corresponds to approximately 6.3 per cent of the total national emissions ..."

"...(excluding land use, land use change and forestry) whereas emissions from electricity production was 34.5 per cent, agriculture 23.4 per cent, industry 20.8 per cent, transport 6.4 per cent, waste 3.4 per cent and emissions from other sectors accounted for 5.2 per cent," he said.

He said a study was published in March 2015 by the Centre for Ecological Sciences of IISc titled 'GHG footprint of major cities in India', conducted for Delhi, Greater Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai, Greater Bangalore, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad.

"The study shows that domestic sector has higher emissions than industries located in these cities. Domestic sector GHG emissions were also higher than transport sector emissions in all cities except Hyderabad and Greater Bangalore," he said.

Replying to another question, he said Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the great Indian tradition of respect for nature and cultural traits such as recycle and reuse which can help in resolving environment related problems.

He said that the national enviroment policy places due emphasis on adoption of traditional methods to resolve environmental problems.
