Guwahati: Environment campaigner Greenpeace India has planned to carry out awareness drives among small tea growers in the state to bring down the level of chemical pesticide use in tea cultivation.

Greenpeace India said increasing use of pesticide has become a major concern in terms of sustainability and ecological impact.

With the growth of the small tea growers' sector in the state, Greenpeace India communication specialist Munna Kumar Jha said the target would be to create awareness among them about the dangers associated with the unregulated use of pesticides.

"We are planning to launch our campaign after Bihu. Assam is a major producer of tea and small tea growers have a significant contribution to the state's production. Hence, our target is to create awareness among them about the dangers of pesticide use," Jha said.

Over 1 lakh people in the state are involved in the sector and it contributes to about 30% of the state's total tea production.

While the tea sector is facing challenges like climate change, increasing pest attacks and diseases, environment experts warned that overuse of pesticides is making the beverage ecologically unsustainable.

"There is growing awareness in the country regarding the various ecological approaches in agriculture. This comes from the realization that current models, which are dependent heavily on external inputs like chemical fertilizers, insecticides and pesticides, would not be sustainable for farmers in the long run," a statement from Greenpeace India said.
