Waste is a major contributor to air pollution, says expert

The Hindu , Thursday, March 12, 2015
Correspondent :
In the city, waste is a major contributor to air pollution, said ecologist T.V. Ramachandra. “Solid waste produces large amounts of methane due to anaerobic bacteria. Methane is far more dangerous than carbon dioxide in terms of global warming. Even pollution of lakes leads to greater methane generation,” he said.

Mr. Ramachandra’s study on urbanisation and greenhouse gas emission in the city paints a worrying picture.

He believes the lack of action in Bengaluru is making the city unlivable.

“Each resident has some amount of contaminant in them, through air or water. Cancer, respiratory-related diseases are increasing. The temperatures are increasing…,” he said.
