Air pollution in city worries Supreme Court

Expressing serious concern about increasing air pollution in the city, the Supreme Court on Friday observed if such levels of pollution continued, “soon children can only be seen in hospital.”

A three-judge bench of Chief Justice H.L. Dattu and Justices Arun Mishra and A.K. Goel made this observation while hearing an application related to air pollution in the city. The court had earlier issued a notice on the plea to Delhi, UP, Haryana, Rajasthan and other authorities seeking stringent emission standards for both petrol and diesel vehicles to control and reduce air pollution and protect the health and well-being of citizens.

Senior counsel and amicus curiae Harish Salve had brought to the court’s notice the report of the Environment Pollution (Prevention & Control) Authority for the national capital region and seeking its immediate intervention. The report said: “Particulate pollution, a serious public health threat and key target of air pollution control measures, is rising rapidly after initial stabilisation.”

Studies show that about 55 per cent of Delhi’s 17 million people, who live within 500 metres from any roadside, are directly exposed to toxic vehicular fume. The court while expressing serious concern said it would take up this issue on March 23.

The court also slammed the National Highways Authority of India for not implementing a decade-old order for constructing Eastern and Western peripheral corridor in the city so that heavy vehicles did not enter the city.
