BHUBANESWAR: Concerned over the depleting ozone layer because of the emission of aviation fuel, civil aviation experts and environmentalists here will discuss measures to be taken to check pollution on Saturday.

Sources said aviation fuel emission, also known as Green House Gas (GHG), poses a potential threat to the environment at the stratospheric level, at the height where most jet aircraft fly.

The Institute of Quality and Environment Management Services (IQEMS) is organizing the workshop. Two years ago, the Biju Patnaik Airport engaged IQEMS, a private consultant and an approved agency of quality council of India, to guide the airport authorities on environment management and studying the impact.

IQEMS director Subrat Panigrahi said the high consumption of aviation fuel by the aircraft, increasing air traffic and airlines not following pollution regulations were a few reasons why there was concern all over the world to frame a stricter policy to address climate change.

"Although many big aircrafts follow pollution control norms, small and local carriers don't have engines that emit less carbon monoxide. As a result the ozone layer is depleted, paving the way for ultraviolet rays to enter the atmosphere. In the long run, this can cause skin diseases and cancer as well," said Panigrahi. Noise pollution due to increased air traffic is also a concern that would be discussed at the workshop, he added.

Besides, the experts are also likely to discuss how to keep the airport periphery areas clean and green. Former director of International Civil Aviation Organization Bibekananda Patnaik and airport director Sharad Kumar are slated to attend the workshop.
