NEW DELHI, JANUARY 4: Rajasthan police has arrested the ‘‘most crucial operator’’ in the wildlife trade in central India today. Madho Singh was picked up from a hideout in Bhogaon in Uttar Pradesh early today morning and was later arrested at Bharatpur by chief investigating officer ASP Samir Singh.

A joint team of CID crime branch and Kota (Rural) police is investigating the nexus between the poachers and inter-state smugglers of wildlife objects. On December 17, the team had arrested Madho Singh’s father, Mohar Singh, from Guna. Following this arrest, Madho Singh absconded.

Mohar Singh has confessed to trading in at least 13 tiger skins from Ranthambhore. He was also the main operator behind the poaching racket that took out tigers by the dozens from the Panna Tiger Reserve. Madho Singh’s mother Bhagwati alias Banso was arrested last month with a leopard skin by the Madhya Pradesh police. ‘‘Together, the family is the biggest operator in wildlife crime in this region. After Sansar Chand’s arrest, they were trying to fill up the vacuum. We hope to get fresh leads during interrogation,’’ SP, Kota (Rural) Alok Bashisht told The Indian Express.
