Chandrapur: A sub-adult leopard was found dead in suspicious condition on the outskirts of Vyahad village in Saoli forest range on Thursday morning. Forest officials claimed that though the carcass was fresh, some of its parts was eaten by scavengers.

The carcass was first noticed by the villagers going to their fields during early hours. Villagers in turn, informed forest officials who rushed to the spot with their team. "All the valuable body parts of leopard were intact, which rules out possibility of poaching. Though some portion on the thigh of the beast was eaten by scavengers after its death, there were no injury marks on its body or signs of scuffle in surrounding indicating conflict with other carnivore," said ACF, Ranjan Pawar.

DFO, SS Patil, ACF Pawar, RFO, Saoli range, Rathod with their subordinates rushed to the spot and took the possession of body. Post mortem carried out by TATR's veterinary doctor Ravikant Khobragade and local vet Dr Jumnake on the spot. "Post mortem findings failed to ascertain the exact cause of death. The beast was empty stomach and might have also suffered from dehydration. Vets have gathered viscera, which will be sent to forensic lab to confirm the exact cause of its death," said honorary wildlife warden, Bandu Dhotre.

Dhotre claimed that the sub-adult leopard was healthy and there is little possibility of its death due to starvation. However, there are several factors in the wild which could lead to death of wild animals. Viscera report would shed more light on the reasons of its death, he said. The carcass of the leopard was cremated in presence of witnesses on the spot.
