The Union Territory’s climate change action plan has been finalised and the development and use of solar energy will have a major role to play in achieving the goals, said M. Dwarakanath, Director, Department of Science, Technology and Environment.

Speaking at a workshop on Concentrating Solar Technologies for Community Cooking, Space Cooling and Process Heat application here on Friday, he said the Puducherry government had prepared the action plan based on the guidelines of the National Action Plan on Climate Change and the Ministry of Environment and Forests . Projects under the solar mission would have a major role to play in the action plan.

R.P. Goswami, Director, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, said that the possibilities of solar energy are immense and have already started making a visible impact on the country’s energy requirements.

Solar energy not only provides affordable and clean energy but also ensures significant growth in green employment and business in the country. The opportunities in solar energy have never looked so bright and it is time the energy systems are transformed making the country energy-independent.

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has been sensitising all sectors, including Education, Industries and Environment and Forests, to increase the use of renewable energy, particularly solar energy.

MNRE provides 60 per cent subsidy on the installation cost of a solar photovoltaic power plant in North-Eastern States and 30 per cent subsidy in other regions, Mr. Goswami said.

R. Smitha, Managing Director (Renewable Energy Agency of Puducherry), spoke.
