NEW DELHI: The Centre for Science and Environment today refused to comment on the dropping of its Director General Sunita Narain from Prime MInister's high level panel on climate change, but instead assured that it would extend its support to the Council.

In a statement, CSE said it would not comment on issue of Narain being dropped from 'Prime Minister's Council on Climate Change' but hoped that the Council will work towards developing an ambitious national plan on climate change.

"The Council has a major task of developing a pragmatic leadership role for India in the global climate negotiations, so that we have an ambitious global climate deal in 2015 in Paris.

"CSE will provide all support and assistance to the Council to achieve these goals," Narain said in a statement, adding, CSE was happy at the reconstitution of the Council.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier today re-constituted a high-level advisory group on climate change, days ahead of a crucial UN meet on global warming in Peru.

While the government retained TERI chairperson R K Pachauri, Nitin Desai and retired diplomat Chandrasekhar Dasgupta as the non-government members of the 18-member council, Narain and industrialist Ratan Tata were dropped.

"We hope that this Council will work towards developing an ambitious national plan on climate change. The 5th assessment report of the IPCC has shown that it will be countries like India and especially the poor of these countries who are going to be the worst affected by climate change.

"India therefore will not only have to mitigate but also start adapting to changing climate," Narain said in the statement.

Both Tata and Narain were members of the high-level panel on climate change constituted by the UPA government in 2007. However, the body has not met for the past three years.

Asked about dropping of Narain from the re-constituted panel, Environment ministry officials said there is a provision in the notification that the chairman can invite any other minister/officer/expert to any meeting of the committee depending upon the context of the meeting.
