BHUBANESWAR: The National Environmental Engineering Research Institution (NEERI), which conducts research and development programmes in environmental science and technology, is likely to submit its final report on industrial pollution in Jharsuguda and Sambalpur on August 21.

The NEERI conducted a survey last year and in its draft report to Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB) pointed out high levels of air pollution at these places.

"The agency will give a presentation in presence of representatives from industries and officials of pollution board, water resources, mining and forest departments. Based on the report, the industries will be issued new guidelines on how to check pollution," said senior environmental scientist of OSPCB D K Behera.

The survey was aimed at examining whether further industrialization of the region was possible. The agency's draft report revealed that emission of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxide and fluoride caused environmental hazards in the areas. "Thermal plants, refractories, sponge iron units and coal mines have cumulative effect on the environment. These industries are contributing to high concentration of fine particulate matter," said Behera.

The pollution board had engaged NEERI to conduct the study in 45-km radius of Rengali in Sambalpur district. Earlier, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, had conducted a similar survey. Based on its report, some industries were served closure notice.

A board official said the study report would also help the board to recommend use of new technology to check pollution.

Official source said there are 23 sponge iron industries in Sambalpur-Jharsuguda region. These units emit 45% ash and generate dust too. In 2012, the pollution board had made pneumatic dust handling compulsory for all industries.
