BANGALORE: With an aim to do some bit for the environment, Bangalore-headquartered Wipro has adopted a variable pay component depending on employees' carbon footprints B - the lesser the carbon footprint created by an employee, the better is the incentive.

Similarly, Indian Information and Technology (IT) giant Infosys Limited has adopted sustainable solutions to increase energy efficiency.

In a report 'ICT sector's s role in Climate Change Mitigation' launched jointly by Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP India) with IIM-Bangalore on September 18, it was revealed that 81% of the ICT companies in the study sample have integrated climate change into their core business strategy. A high 40% have managed to reduce their absolute emissions, which the experts said are encouraging figures.

The study analysed voluntary information supplied by 320 ICT companies from 35 countries including Indian firms Infosys, TCS and Wipro along with global players like Accenture, Microsoft, IBM, Google, Vodafone among others and got interesting trends across them.

"Majority of firms are setting emission reduction targets and focusing on quantifying impacts and financial implications of climate change on their businesses. Though the results are encouraging, this report clearly emphasizes the need for more concerted efforts to monitor and facilitate corporate disclosures of climate change related information," said Damandeep Singh, Director, CDP India.

"The ICT sector, while not the largest, is still a significant contributor to carbon emissions. These companies can create significant competitive advantages for themselves by building a comprehensive sustainability strategy.

Importantly, the ICT sector has a cascading effect on related sectors. Therefore a more sustainable ICT sector can drive its adjacent sectors to adopt a more sustainable growth strategy," said P D Jose, Associate Professor, Corporate Strategy and Policy Area, IIM.
