MYSORE: This news will sure make you breathe easy. The last week's Diwali may have been the nosiest in the last three years, but the resultant air pollution is less than what it was during the previous seasons. What's more, it was even lesser than the permissible limits.

The officials of Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) attribute the welcome change to awareness among Diwali revellers on the ill-effects of firecrackers.

According to the officers, all the parametres used to measure ambient air quality is well within the standards and less when compared to previous year figures.

However, they claimed that particulate matter in air crossed the threshold on the first day of Diwali celebrations in Kuvempunagar. But on the third day, the matter was within the limits.

The officials monitored the air quality at three places: KSPCB's regional office in Hebbal, Kuvempunagar and KR Circle. They monitored particulate matter (Pm-10), sulphur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels on November 1, 2, 4 and 5. However, it was not done on November 3 (Diwali).

KSPCB's environment officer (Mysore region) P Niranjan said this season, the results of ambient air quality monitored at all the three places are far below the prescribed standards.

At KR Circle, particulate matter parametre had exceeded in 2011 and 2012. The results have crossed the prescribed standard of 100 microgram per meter cube (mpmc). In 2011, the results were 112 on the final day of Diwali celebrations and 131 in 2012. But this year, it was within the limits at 84 mpmc. And at two other locations too, the final-day reading was lesser than the standards.

Meanwhile, the officials have observed that the noise level has not met the standard this festival season. It was monitored at one place (KSPCB's regional office) for four days and on the last day of Diwali celebrations. The level reached 69.7 decibel as against 69 decibel in 2012 and 62.66 decibel in 2011.
