Warning on climate change

Correspondent :
With the annual mean temperature in the country showing a rising trend in the past 100 years, environment experts have urged the public to take steps to reduce the impact of this global crisis at a conference in Indian Institute of Technology in city on Saturday. Scientists and experts from reputed instituions took stock of the climate change issues and its implications in the country.

Experts from Jawaharlal Nehru University, JNU, IIT Delhi, IIT-Bombay, Indian Agricultural Research Institute and UCAS Bangalore came together to deliberate on the issue of climate change, keeping recently released Assessment Report-5 by the Intergovernmental Panel on climate change (IPCC) as a premise. The report stated that the result of the climate change would be floods and droughts, which would effect the entire world.

Answering various queries from the audience Prof. Rajamani said, “Climate Change in India is real. Annual mean temperature in India for the past 110 years shows an increasing trend.

There is also a definite increase in the sea-level and sea surface temperature. Simply put, the values in India are comparable to global values and yet, public participation in addressing this issue is minor”.

The interaction threw light on several facets of climate change issues based on the findings of an indigenous research. One of the findings from INSA’s study was that the magnitude of temperature and atmospheric CO2 has increased and the year of accelerated rise is comparable to global values.

Similarly, while long term monsoon rainfall in the last 50 years indicates a slight decrease, extreme rainfall events are on the increase.
