Guwahati: In the wake of rise in rhino poaching at Kaziranga National Park and strident criticism by BJP, Union minister of state for environment, forest and climate change Prakash Javadekar has promised to work in collaboration with the forest department for conservation of the state animal.

In his first visit to the state after taking charge of the ministry, Javadekar on Friday took stock of conservation and protection issues related to Kaziranga and other protected areas. Javadekar had first round of consultation with conservationists and representatives of various NGOs at the Patgaon-based BSF camp here on Friday.

Later, he left for Kaziranga where he will have first-hand experience of conservation and protection measures in Kaziranga, where already 22 rhinos have been killed this year.

"Besides meeting Kaziranga officials, I will also have discussions with locals there. We believe that community participation is a must for successful conservation," said Javadekar.

State forest minister Rockybul Hussain has requested MoEF to launch Project Rhino with an outlay of Rs 500 crore, considering the importance of rhinos as a flagship species in the state and mounting poaching threats which has an international dimension.
