The city administration is contemplating on initiating action against various industrial units in the national capital that are purportedly flouting pollution rules and causing water contamination and environment pollution.

According to environment department officials, the department has been receiving complaints against some industrial units in the city either flouting the pollution norms or indulging in practices leading to unabated water contamination and air pollution in their adjoining areas. “The department has received reports that some of the units are carelessly throwing away or releasing acidic affluent in drains or on the roads. These discharges may be extremely harmful and can lead to heavy contamination of the groundwater and environment,” a senior department official said.

The official said the department is likely to seek a fact-finding report from the Delhi Pollution Control Committee about these units following which a detailed report would be prepared and sent to the Delhi’s lieutenant-governor for required action.

As per the complaints received, many units including some in the Wazirpur industrial area have not still installed common effluent treatment plants to treat liquid waste, and some of the small industries, which usually use coal-fired boilers, do not purportedly have individual facilities to reduce fly ash generated by them. “If these complaints are found true, action would be initiated against them,” the official added.

The department had also been contemplating on shifting industrial units which are located near the Yamuna River to a new industrial area as most of them were found to release untreated water into the river. The department had written to many units along with the pollution control committee and the DDA in this regard and sought their views, suggestions and reservations.

Besides, L-G Najeeb Jung had earlier directed the DPCC to serve notices to polluting units and also asked the urban development secretary to take action against inspectors for not acting on pollution control committee’s orders.

The committee had also earlier issued closure notices to 112 industrial units mainly steel-pickling units in the Wazirpur Industrial Area for discharging untreated toxic waste water in drains that empty in the Yamuna. With about 2,000 industrial units, the Wazirpur Industrial Area has been in news for not meeting pollution norms.
