NAVI MUMBAI: The forensic report sent to the range forest office at Uran has confirmed that the feathers, broken beaks and bones discovered at Phunde village in Uran are of flamingoes.

TOI had reported on February 20 that the villagers had found three broken beaks, bones and scattered feathers, which seemed to resemble those of flamingoes. Forest department had seized and sent them for forensic analysis.

Talking to TOI, the range forest officer (RFO) at Uran, Chandrakant Marathe, said that the report confirmed that the remains are those of flamingoes. He added that it is not clear if birds were killed by animals or humans.

Uran locals fear that there is a poaching racket going on in the wetlands.

"When the remains were spotted in February, we found out that some people are hunting these birds. However, we did not have proof. The forest department must increase security in the wetlands," said activist M Thali.

Environmentalist D Stalin of the NGO Vanashakti said, that around four years ago, nearly 60 acres of wetlands in Uran were destroyed for developing Navi Mumbai Special Economic Zone. "It is high time forest department and Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority step in to protect our flora and fauna," he added.

RFO Marathe said, "We have regular patrols in the wetlands."
