Security tightened ahead of Bishu Parva

JAMSHEDPUR: The forest department has made comprehensive safety and security arrangements across the three districts of the Kolhan division to prevent armed tribals from entering into the Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary on Bishu Parva, the annual hunting festival.

With the joint coordination of the forest department and district administration of the respective districts an elaborate security cover is being put in place to check poaching.

The tribals from the adjoining states of Bengal and Odisha also visit the state to celebrate Bishu Parva, popularly known as Sendra festival. The forest department has identified over 12 check points wherein special bandobast has been made.

"Keen festival enthusiasts will begin walking into the forest from May 11 therefore the security tightened from Sunday," said a senior forest department official of the state. Dhalbhumgarh, Pipla, Patamda, Paridih Kali Mandir, Bhadudih and Bahragora, serve as entry points to the forest area.

As part of its exercise, to prevent hunting of the wild animals, the department has divided the 98-sq km Dalma Sanctuary into multiple zones, for effective vigilance.

"We have explained to the keen festival enthusiasts about the ecological dangers of hunting animals and at the same time appealed to them not to indulge in killing spree," said Dalma forest ranger, Mangal Kachap.

He added that awareness campaign in villages surrounding Dalma sanctuary was carried out to enlighten the tribal villagers on ways to observe the festival peacefully. Hunting and killing of wild animals have been banned in the sanctuary area. Despite warnings, tribals move into the core areas of jungle in search of animals around this time every year and kill birds, wild pigs, deer, among other animals.

The forest department has strictly asked the festival enthusiasts not to carry lethal weapons and has also banned trap nets.

"We will observe the festival in a traditional manner but at the same time we will also try and prevent them (enthusiast hunters) from hunting wild animals," said Rakesh Hembram, president of Dalma Buru Sendra Samity that has called for May 12 celebrations.

The other outfit, Dalma Buru Sendra Disuwa has announced May 16 for the Sendra festival.
