NAGPUR: The tiger poaching cases registered two new developments on Friday. A poacher was nabbed in Madhya Pradesh and the bail application of poachers Mamru and Chika was rejected by the judicial magistrate first class (JMFC) R B Raja.

A police team from Umariya in Madhya Pradesh on Thursday night arrested Saranki, an accomplice of the notorious poacher Ajit. Ajit is now in Nagpur Central Jail. Police arrested Saranki after being tipped off by the members of a leading NGO working in the field of wildlife enforcement.

Saranki (22) and four others led by Ajit had killed a tiger in Umred-Karhandla Wildlife Sanctuary in May.

Saranki's name figures in Ajit's confession statement. With his arrest, the number of tiger poachers in the police net has gone up to 16. However, 32 poachers and tiger traders are still at large.

A team led by investigating officer RD Kharabe left for Umariya on Friday afternoon to take custody of Saranki. The poacher, belonging to the Bahelia community, was heading to Bilaspur when he was arrested.

The rejection of the bail application of Mamru and Chika has come as a shot in arm for the forest department. "Had the duo been granted bail, others too would have applied for it," said forest officials.

The arguments on the bail application were heard on October 7. The court upheld special counsel for forest department Kartik Shukul's submission that both the accused had six cases pending against them and had given fake addresses. The court said that tiger poaching was a serious matter.

The court also agreed with Shukul's contention that the accused will jump bail conditions and also not appear for trial, besides continuing poaching activity. The court has also rejected defence counsel PS Sontakke's contention that call detail records (CDRs) is not a piece of corroborative evidence.

The court has also rejected Sontakke's argument as to why the trial is being heard in Nagpur when the crime had happened in Melghat. Quoting the order, sources from forest department said the court pointed out that the case has been filed in Nagpur as the tiger skins were traded from here.
