State split stalls shift of polluting industries

Hyderabad: Nothing has been done to implement the government order from the industries department to relocate industrial clusters within the city out of the Outer Ring Road owing to the state’s division.

The GO, passed in early 2013, was seen as a breather by the affected residents living around the over 45 industrial clusters within the city. Pollution Board officials now say it is uncertain when the relocation can take place as except for passing the order, nothing has been initiated.

“The implementation of the GO depends on the newly formed government. Even then, new place needs to be identified for different industries and the industries too need to be convinced,” said an official of AP Pollution Control Board.

The move is aimed at checking environment pollution caused by these industries in the city, mainly through water pollution of nalas, air pollution and ground water pollution.

There are 14 industrial estates in the city and outside its limits, but inside the ORR. In these estates over 10,000 small, medium and big industries operate.

Except for non-polluting industries like IT, all other industries are supposed to be moved out from Qutbullapur, Jeedimetla, Balanagar, Kattedan, Gajularamaram, Uppal, Moula Ali, Autonagar, Kushaiguda, Nacharam, Patancheru, Ramachandrapuram, Mallapur and Cherlapally.

Mr Ramchander, a resident of Apoorpa Colony, Jeedimetla said, “In view of health hazards that we, the residents are prone to, the government should come up with a time-frame to shift these industries. Hundreds of residential colonies have come up in and around these industrial areas. Several families are prone to health hazards due to the air, water pollution caused by these industries.”
