JAIPUR: Wildlife poaching accused Sansar Chand, who was terminally ill, died on Tuesday at SMS hospital. Notorious tiger poacher was facing trial on charges related to killing of several wild cats of Sariska Tiger reserve.

Chand was lodged in Alwar central jail and was brought to SMS hospital last week. According to doctors, he had tumors in his lungs, brain and spinal cord. The cancer was in the last stage. He went into coma on Monday. Before being shifted to SMS, he was undergoing treatment at AIIMS in Delhi.

"I got the news of Sansar Chand's death from his daughter. He was facing charges in two cases and I had requested the court to hear his cases on a day-to-day basis and demanded bail," said his lawyer, Ashok Sharma.

Chand, a resident of New Delhi, is believed to be India's biggest wildlife criminal and responsible for more tiger and leopard deaths than anyone else.

Diaries seized from Sansar Chand's family by the Rajasthan Police in 2004 allegedly showed transactions of 40 tiger skins and 400 leopard skins in a period of just 11 months from October 2003 to September 2004. During interrogation by the CBI in 2006, Sansar Chand apparently admitted to selling 470 tiger skins and 2,130 leopard skins to just four clients from Nepal and Tibet.
