HARIDWAR: A 20-year-old female elephant was found dead in Chidiyapur forest range, 22 km from here, on Thursday morning.

Although the cause of death is yet to be ascertained, prima facie it is a case of electrocution, sources said. The exact cause and time of death will be ascertained after post-mortem. Poaching has been ruled out since the elephant was female.

Local sub-divisional forest officer Sant Ram said, "The elephant had fallen on a solar fence between the forests and the fields. The trunk and front part of her body were lying under the weight of the rest of the body."

According to reports, some farmers found the carcass near Ketwad forest post of the range under Haridwar division of forests. A known elephant track runs through the area.

Following the tip-off, a forest department team rushed to the spot and barricaded the area.
