NEW DELHI: The government on Friday approved a national mission to sustain the Himalayan ecosystem. The mission, with an outlay of Rs 550 crore during the 12th plan period, will focus on biodiversity, conservation and protection of wildlife, traditional knowledge of societies and their livelihood in the region.

It will also assist in restoration and rehabilitation process of Uttarakhand which had seen large-scale deforestation due to massive construction works in the region and faced massive devastation following flash floods in June last year.

The mission will cover 12 Himalayan states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Meghalaya, Assam and West Bengal.

"Marginalized and vulnerable communities of the Himalayan region would be the major beneficiaries of the mission," said a government statement.

Though the mission is part of the government ambitious National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) which was launched in 2008, the component to look after the Himalayan eco-system could not take off due to non-finalization of required scheme.

The Union Cabinet on Friday approved the mission document which will attempt to address a variety of important issues, including studying the Himalayan glaciers and associated hydrological consequences and prediction and management of natural hazards.
