SURAT: The green common office complex in Vyara town, the district headquarters of Tapi, which is located just 70km from Surat city, will help the authorities save on consumption of energy and water in a very substantial manner.

"We will save in consumption of energy by at least 30 per cent and water by 40 per cent besides keeping the whole area in consonance with nature," said MM Chaudhary, executive engineer, Tapi roads and buildings.

The 100 per cent eco-friendly complex on 1,00,027sqm of land has been built at a cost of Rs 90 crore and houses more than 30 buildings comprising the offices of district collector, superintendent of police, district panchayat and revenue department. The complex also has the staff quarters for officials and a commodity centre, a multi-purpose hall and a shopping place.

The office complex has been built as per the green building norms prescribed by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) under the supervision of a Bengalaru-based engineering company.

The office complex has solar panels on roof tops, percolation wells for harvesting rainwater and facility to recycle used water. The office complex's construction design ensures that there is no requirement of electricity either for heating or for air-conditioning. The use of China mosaics in the construction helps keep the indoors of the office complex warm or cold as per requirement.

"Climate change is having disastrous effects on our environment. This office complex demonstrates a judicious way to combat them and create an environment where energy is efficiently used. This office complex is a model for others to set up green projects in urban and semi-urban areas," said KB Upadhyay, district development officer.
