How will the future Earth look like? How do we tackle the present challenges of global warming, climate change, frequent earthquakes and sustainable exploitation of natural resources?

These and several other questions and issues related to sustainability of earth systems will be discussed by scientists, researchers and policy planners during the five-day 50th annual convention of the Indian Geophysical Union here from Wednesday.

“The increasing loss of human lives and natural wealth due to earthquakes and tsunamis in the last two decades are pointers to the changing earth systems. Therefore, we need a better understanding of the formations of earth for better preparedness to save the planet,” Harsh Gupta, president of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics, told media persons here today.

He said about 250 delegates, including overseas delegates from the US, Malaysia, Taiwan and Singapore, will be attending the event.

The event will see the signing of a MoU between the Indian Geophysical Union and American Geophysical Union for exchange of scientific resources and joint programmes.

Gupta said there will be a special session on “Future Earth” that would include talks on sustainability of groundwater resources, early warning system for monsoon and cyclonic disturbances and sustainability of the human society. Environmental geosciences covering pollution and climate change, marine geosciences with focus on continental margins and solid earth geosciences related to natural hazards would be the other topics for discussion.

Nobel Laureate Y.T. Lee will inaugurate the conference.
