`Tiger should be worshipped'

LUCKNOW: Sharing concern over the depletion of forest and wildlife and the raging controversy of decrease in tiger population in the country, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav today said the government would accord topmost priority to eradicate poaching to preserve wildlife. ``There is a urgent need to increase our forest cover which is only 8 per cent at present leading to downfall in the ground water level'', he said while speaking at the felicitation ceremony of Billy Arjan Singh, one of the most celebrated wildlife conservationists in the country. The Chief Minister chose the occasion to announce Yash Bharti award for the internationally renowned wild life expert. Mr Yadav, called upon the people to work for fulfilling the dreams of the wildlife conservator, on behalf of his government. Billy, in his address, shared concern over the loss wildlife and asked for strong measures to check it. He urged the government to set up separate cadre for protection of wildlife and forests. "Only a dedicated workforce can prevent the poachers for attacking the wildlife and forestry'', he said. On the findings of the government on the census in several tiger reserves in the country, the wildlife expert said that in order to preserve the wildlife, people should fight against the poachers. Making a fervent appeal to the environment lovers, he said "Tiger should be worshipped as God of the jungle ''. - UNI
