JORHAT: Poachers killed yet another one-horned rhino in the world-famous Kaziranga National Park and decamped with its horn on Tuesday, taking the number of rhinos poached this year to 22.

The incident took place near Debeswari Anti-Poaching Camp in Agoratoli forest range of the par. Forest officials found the carcass of the male adult rhino around 11 am on Tuesday while they were conducting a patrol. According to forest officials, the rhino was probably killed on Monday night. Park director N K Vasu said, "The adult male rhino was gunned down near Debeswari forest camp on Monday night. Our employees did not hear the gunshots at night, and so did not launch an operation. They found the carcass during regular patrolling in the northern region of the park."

Divisional forest officer (Kaziranga) S K Seal Sharma said, "The incident took place about 2 km away from the Debeswari Anti-Poaching Camp on the banks of the river Brahmaputra. We believe the rhino was killed while it was raining at night. We have collected some clues about the poachers' gang and our operation is on. We are hopeful that we will be able to nab them soon."

On September 18, poachers killed an adult male rhino between Sorali and Borbhug anti-poaching camps in Burapahar forest range of the park. Poachers shot the rhino dead and chopped off its horn. Another two rhinos, one a rhino calf, were killed by poachers in the same forest range in August. Although Assam government has been taking measures to strengthen security at the national park, such as deploying Assam Forest Protection Force personnel to prevent rhino poaching, killing continued unabated.
