Correspondent :
Nitta Gelatin India Ltd (NGIL) officials have refuted all the allegations against the company. They said that company is open to a joint study about the alleged pollution caused by it by any independent government approved agency and are ready to welcome any suggestions for improvement. In their opinion, the protest against the company is due to vested interest of some residents in the region. Terming the recent lathi charge as ‘unfortunate’, NGIL Executive Director (Ossein Operations), B Shaji Mohan said that the company adheres to all the guidelines prescribed by the Central Pollution Control Board.

“Some residents and former employees of the company, with vested interests, are behind the agenda to close down the company which is 34 years old. The problems in the company started in 2002 when a trade union leader P C Sasi was beaten within the company and five employees were terminated in connection with the incident. Since then, the company has been facing a series of problems”, Shaji said. He said that NGIL employs around 100 people from Kathikudam in its two units in the state. “The company is permitted to discharge treated water to Chalakkudy River and we are not discharging any sludge, which is waste. We have a facility to separate sludge. The company is in the process of reducing air pollution. The protest intensified during June which was the period to renew our licence.

Capacity of the company is 75-80 tonnes per day and 25 per cent waste is produced. In 2011 we were using 62.9 lakh litre of water per day but now it has been reduced to 30 lakh litre”, he added.

The Kathikudam unit of NGIL employs 155 people and Kakkanad unit employs 160 people.
