Tiger pelt seized, five arrested

The Forest Department officials on Friday arrested five persons and seized a tiger pelt at Masinagudi near Bandipur, close to Mudumalai National Park.

The seizure has worried the officials of both Bandipur and Nagarhole National Parks about the safety of the striped cats. This incident has proved that tiger poachers are still active in the thick forests of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The arrested are tribals belonging to Tamil Nadu.

According to Chinese calender, this is the year of Tiger because of which there is great demand for tiger pelt and other parts. The Forest Department officials are keeping a vigil in the forests, in view of this. The officials are investigating whether the arrested have any link with Papa and Sangaiah of Haggadallada and Yelchetti near Bandipur, who are involved in poaching two tigers.
